Why the low back belongs to the Kidney
The classical texts say the low back is the residence of the Kidney. That is not metaphor so much as clinical observation: back pain that worsens with fatigue, worsens with age, comes with weak knees, and improves with rest tends to respond to Kidney-tonifying formulas rather than to anything aimed at the muscle.
The distinction that matters is whether your back pain is deficient or stuck.
Deficient pain is dull, aching, worse when you are tired, better with warmth and rest, and it has usually been there for years. It often comes with weak knees and low energy.
Stuck pain is sharp, fixed in one place, worse with pressure, often traceable to an injury. It wants blood-moving formulas rather than tonics.
Cold-damp pain is heavy and stiff, markedly worse in wet or cold weather, better with heat and movement. Warming formulas are the match.
Tonifying a stuck pattern does not help, and moving blood in a depleted patient depletes them further. This is why the same complaint gets different formulas.
What I do alongside herbs
Acupuncture, and honestly the unglamorous parts: getting off the chair, strengthening the posterior chain, and sleeping enough that tissue can repair. Herbs support that work. They do not replace it.

Get assessed rather than self-treating if
You have numbness or weakness in a leg, any change in bladder or bowel control, unexplained weight loss alongside the pain, fever, pain that is markedly worse at night, or the pain followed significant trauma. Those need imaging and examination, not herbs.
