A 9-herb topical for the bruises and sore muscles that come with a body that's used.
Description
A handcrafted Chinese herbal liniment for fresh bruises, minor sprains, and the kind of soreness that follows a hard workout, a fall, or a long day. Apply it where it hurts. External use only.
What it does
- Supports natural recovery from fresh bruises and minor sprains
- Helps soothe the ache of overworked muscles
- Eases the lingering soreness after deep tissue work, cupping, or gua sha
- Traditional Chinese herbs for topical circulation and comfort
Use it for
- Bruises (in the first 24-48 hours, once any active bleeding has stopped)
- Sprained ankles, minor joint strains
- Pulled muscles, post-workout soreness
- Tender spots after a cupping or gua sha session
- Old injuries that ache in cold or damp weather
How to use
Shake the bottle. Apply a small amount to the affected area 2-3 times daily and massage in gently. Wash your hands after. If the skin is broken, wait until it's closed before applying.
About the herbs
In Chinese medicine, this category of formula is called Die Da (跌打), meaning "fall and strike." The herbs pair two functions. Some move stuck blood (Hong Hua, Mo Yao, Ru Xiang, Xue Jie, Dang Gui Wei). Others cool inflammation and heat (Da Huang, Zhi Zi, Huang Bai). Lu Lu Tong opens the channels so the others can do their work.

Full ingredients
Alcohol (solvent), Da Huang (Chinese rhubarb root), Zhi Zi (gardenia fruit), Hong Hua (safflower), Huang Bai (phellodendron bark), Mo Yao (myrrh resin), Ru Xiang (frankincense resin), Xue Jie (dragon's blood resin), Lu Lu Tong (sweetgum fruit), Dang Gui Wei (Chinese angelica root tail).
Cautions
- External use only. The base is alcohol. Do not ingest.
- Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or mucous membranes.
- Avoid contact with eyes.
- Not for use during pregnancy. Several of these herbs (Hong Hua, Dang Gui, Mo Yao, Ru Xiang) strongly move blood and are traditionally contraindicated in pregnancy.
- If you're nursing, avoid applying near the chest.
- Discontinue if skin irritation develops.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Pairs well with
Most active people who deal with fresh injuries also deal with chronic ones. The Tendon & Repair Lotion is the warming counterpart to this cooling formula, built for old injuries, tendinopathy, and stiff joints. Get both together with 15% off in the Athletic Recovery Duo Bundle.
Frequently asked questions
Will it stain my clothes or sheets?
The liniment can leave faint yellow-orange marks on light fabric because of Hong Hua (safflower) and the other plant pigments. Let it absorb fully (about 60 seconds) before getting dressed or lying on light bedding. Normal laundering usually handles any marks that do transfer.
How strong is the alcohol smell?
Noticeable for the first 30-60 seconds, then it fades as the alcohol evaporates. What's left is an earthy, woody herbal scent, not perfumed.
Can I use this with arnica gel or CBD products?
Yes, though usually you wouldn't need to layer them. This liniment covers similar ground (anti-inflammatory, circulation, comfort) and is more potent than most arnica creams. If you want to combine, space them by an hour and apply the liniment second so the alcohol doesn't dilute the cream.
How long does one bottle last?
With typical use (a few drops, 2-3 times daily on a small area), 2-4 weeks. Heavier use on a larger area shortens that. The dropper top makes it easy to use sparingly.
Can I use it on my kids' bruises?
Not without speaking to your pediatrician or licensed acupuncturist first. The formula is built for adult tissue. Several of the herbs (Hong Hua, Mo Yao, Ru Xiang) are strong blood-movers, and pediatric topical safety isn't well-studied. For a child's bruise, cold compress and time usually do the trick.
